"The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Cannot Rock the Boardroom"
Intelligence Squared proudly presents four leading female voices to argue the motion “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle Cannot Rock the Boardroom”, coinciding with International Women’s Day 2014. In what promises to be a thrilling debate, the panel will shed light on the tensions between maternal responsibilities and professional competence.
“Lean in!” is the rallying cry of Facebook’s COO Sheryl Sandberg, whose book of that name has inspired professional women all over the world to pursue their goals with gusto. Yet despite the increase of female executives in Hong Kong and globally, statistics often suggest that women are underrepresented in the workforce primarily by virtue of their association with homemaking. Has the “glass ceiling” really been broken or is it merely a fabricated notion? Why does society heed to such passé standards of what makes a good mother or a good executive? Or is the pressure to be brilliant at every aspect of life - in the boardroom, the nursery, the school sports day - an expectation that most women cannot hope to attain? Join in the debate on 3 March 2014, the first Intelligence Squared debate to be broadcast from Hong Kong on BBC World.
