Intelligence Squared, the premier international forum for live debate, presents the motion “Religion Is Good for Us”. The event will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Thursday, 11 April 2013, from 6:30-8:00pm.

Throughout history and civilisation, religion has been a cause of peace and violence, tolerance and divisions, charity and selfishness. Wars, inquisitions and massacres have resulted from religious beliefs, a contrast to the universal message of love and forgiveness espoused by most organized faiths. This mixed history of Li Hongzhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Baruch Goldstein and Osama bin Laden invites the question of whether religion is good for society.

Four leading international thinkers will face-off on the issue in a stimulating Oxbridge-style debate, addressing questions such as: In a world of rapid social change, does religion provide the common values and ethical foundations that societies need? Is faith dangerous, inspiring blinded defence of dogmatic views that lead to conflict? Does religion hold a monopolistic grip on good behaviour? Or do religious beliefs promote virtuous and moral living for developing and developed nations alike?
